The original Suicide Squad was polarising, to say the very least. The film was so full of holes and blunders that a lot of fans and critics were up in arms. It received marginal success at the box office due to the brand and the usual flock of people who watch superhero movies, but it definitely required some improvements. A sequel was definitely expected following the success and it seems the wheels are in motion already.
Joel Kinnaman, the actor who played Rick Flag, made the following statement: “As far as I know they’re writing the script and I think the plan is to shoot it sometime in 2018, but that could change. I think I’ll definitely come back for it.” Director David Ayer is not set to direct the sequel and has moved on to other films, so the director’s chair is open to anyone.
With the original film being so maligned, a change of director can be for the best. David Ayer was capable, but his vision for the film wasn’t the best and that translated into a frustrating watching experience. Mel Gibson has stated that he’s in talks to direct the sequel, but we haven’t heard from him regarding it in a while. Hopefully the change will give the franchise the attention it deserves. There’s so much potential in the villain-centric cast and I’d hate to see it wasted.
