While admittedly this news piece feels like I’m commenting on the new colour of Yeezies, it’s a surprisingly important story to cover within the whole Star Wars saga. Lightsabers are the iconic weapons of the galaxy far far away and they’ve been rather uniform within the main numbered movies. Red for the baddies, blue for the good fellas and ladies, otherwise known and Sith and Jedi respectively. Yoda and Luke Skywalker wanted to be special by having green lightsabers and Mace Windu channelled his sexual frustration with his purple lightsaber.
Of course, the extended canon has all the colours of the rainbow in it, including black and even pink. However, the main series didn’t have too many diversions to the usual formula and it would be somewhat of a surprise to see a new colour in the hands of our heroes and villains. Director Rian Johnson has been hinting that we’ll be seeing a new colour in The Last Jedi. He’s obviously being a little cryptic, but the speculations have already started. The main running theory is that there will be a yellow lightsaber as it was the colour used by old Jedi Sentinels and can be used in the Jedi Temple where Luke Skywalker resides.
My money is on a white lightsaber, even if it will look like a fluorescent bulb. White signifies so much and it will possibly be in the hands of Rey as she learns the intricacies of the Force and ushers herself into the role of “saving the universe”. We’ve already seen new lightsabers in the previous film, notably Kylo Ren’s now iconic lightsaber that has overflowing pommels on the side. To give the main heroes their own unique brand of lightsaber will be the logical step forward.
