Slender Man started as this strange internet creation that was popularised by screaming YouTubers and the usual fare of online mob conspiracy theory and “fun” fan theories. The character of Slender Man is creepy enough, with his elongated limbs, no face and a business suit (the scariest thing of it all), there’s also a huge backstory and lore to what he is capable of. Children go missing or insane when they interact with him. He creeps around in the woods looking for his next victim and causes victims to draw wild stuff and plaster it all over.
Slender Man is the epitome of an urban legend and like most legends, it often gets exploited by Hollywood. A Slender Man movie has been in the works for a very long time. It is finally nearing its completion and will release in May and the first trailer has just arrived, which you can watch thusly:
The trailer is suitably unsettling and the whole vibe of Slender Man looks like it has been translated well. The movie was in danger of being some kind of B-list horror with corny storylines and dumb special effects, but the first trailer makes it look like there’s something to this whole thing. I still won’t put all my chips on this being a gigantic success, but there’s latent potential here.
